Exit Survey

Hello:
You are invited to participate in my survey regarding consumer awareness of genetically modified food, part of a research project at Central Arizona College. I hope about 75-100 people will participate. It will take approximately 4-5 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point. It is important for me to learn your opinions.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, feel free to contact me, Berenice Pelayo, by email at ([email protected]).

Thank you very much for your time and support.

General Information:
Genetic modification, is a term used for the recombination of certain favorable genes used to manipulate an organism's genetic material. These favorable genes include characteristics that could potentially cause a fruit to take longer to soften, lessen the need for herbicides or to simply enhance the aesthetic appearance of produce. Those in favor of genetic engineering conjecture that there is multiple benefits such as drought tolerance, a reduced need for pesticides and increased yield. Every organism has DNA and genetic modification is the process of altering, whether that be through supplementing, removing or substituting a favorable or unfavorable gene. In regards to agriculture, this method is used to yield a higher density of commodity crops at a faster rate. In view of the fact that GMO's are a relatively new technology the long-term effect of this new wave of crops is yet to be determined, until then it should not be mass-produced. A major concern is that non-GMO crops can become exposed to GM crops and diminish varieties of naturally occurring plants which is essential to the environment's biodiversity. Opposition states that GMO's should be labeled so consumers are aware of the product they are purchasing.
