Art 8-1 Drawing – Level II
One trimester - One block
Fee: $5.00 to cover art materials.
Objectives: To further develop understanding and technique of drawing skills on two-dimensional surfaces.
Evaluation: Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills through projects and in-class performance.
Required Materials: Pencil, eraser, ruler, pencil crayons.
Art 8-2 Introduction to Watercolour - Painting
One trimester - One block
Fee: $10.00 to cover art materials.
Objectives: Students will develop understanding and technique of watercolour painting skills.
Evaluation: Demonstration of knowledge and skills through projects and in-class performance.
Required Materials: Pencil, eraser, ruler, pencil crayons.
Art 8-3 3D Image Art – Level II
One trimester - One block
Fee: $10.00 to cover art materials
Objectives: To develop understanding and technique of sculpture using the medium of plasticine.
Evaluation: Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills through projects and in-class performance.
Required Materials: Pencil, eraser, plastic container to store sculptures.
BAND 8 - Concert Band - 3rd Year Band
Full year - Three blocks
Fee: $30 for printed music, supplies, and use of technical book. Percussionist fee is an additional $30.
Objectives: To continue development of instrumental skills, the ability to read more advanced music and composer marks. To increase students’ range and facility in playing their band instrument.
Homework: Students must be willing to practice at least 15 minutes, 5 times per week and attend early morning practice once a week. The students must also keep a practice log every week. Students must be committed to the band program for the whole school year.
Evaluation: Monthly playing tests, performances at school, Music Festival and music theory.
Required Materials: Pencil, rented instrument with accessories.
Prerequisite: Grade 7 Concert Band.
Band Instrument Rental: May be rented through the school for $210.00 per year (Sept. 1-June 30) of which $50.00 is a caution fee that is fully refunded upon return on the instrument in the same condition it was rented, except for normal wear and tear.
Additional Costs: Parents should expect an additional expense of approximately $200.00 for band camp which happens in the spring.
CHOIR 8 Choir
Full year - Three Blocks
Fee: $10 to cover the cost of music.
Objectives: To learn the basics of choral singing: vocal skills, reading music, singing harmony, and performance.
Evaluation: Ongoing evaluation of vocal skills, participation and performance.
Required materials: Pencil, duotang, and a great attitude!

Course Description/General Outcomes: Web 2.0 systems are internet based applications that help us organize, search, store, read, brainstorm, blog, online presentations and more. This course is for those who are truly into computing and technology. Some applications we will be focusing on are:

DRAMA 8-1 Introduction to Improvisation & Drama One trimester - One block
Fee: $12.00 for performance materials.
Objectives: To learn drama controls and routines. To develop climate and self confidence. To work alone, in small or large groups. To study the art of improvisation. To perform in front of others.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on all of the objectives mentioned above and their positive interaction with others and participation in the class.
Required Materials: Duo tang, pen/pencils. Bring any unused clothes from home to be donated to the school for skits and plays.
DRAMA 8-2 Plays and Music Videos
One trimester - One block
Fee: $10.00 to cover the cost of performance materials. Course cost covers guest director.
Objectives: To perform in a video and in a play. To work alone, in small groups, and large groups. To perform short plays in front of audiences. To develop confidence.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on all of the objectives mentioned above and their positive interaction with others and participation in the class.
Required Materials: Duo tang, pen/pencils.
DRAMA 8-3 Script and Performance Drama
One trimester - One block
Fee: $10.00 to cover costs of materials. Course cost covers guest director.
Objectives: To learn performance analysis, theatre history and script writing. To build a fictional character and bring it to life in a skit or play. To write a script. To perform short plays in front of class and/or other audiences.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on all of the objectives mentioned above and their positive interaction with others and participation in the class.
Required materials: Duo tang, pen/pencil. Bring any unused clothes from home to be donated to the school for skits and plays.
FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE FSL 8 If your child plans to do the academic stream in high school and go on to university it is recommended that he/she continue with French.
Full year - Three blocks
Fee: $12.00 to cover course materials and workbook
Objectives: To continue developing level 4 French language skills through listening, speaking, reading and written production.
Evaluation: Tests, quizzes and projects.
Required Materials: Notebook, pen, French/English dictionary and blank cassette tape.
Prerequisite: Grade 7 French or equivalent.
GOLF 8 “A Good Walk Gone Bad” One trimester – One block
Fee: $50.00 to cover the cost of course materials and a planned field trip.
Objectives: The “Good Walk Gone Bad” module will give the participants an opportunity to understand the game of golf through history, equipment technology, etiquette, rules and skill development.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and self evaluation of projects, notebook and module test and demonstration of skill techniques.
Required materials: Participants are not expected to have their own clubs, however, are welcome to bring their own clubs. Balls and tees for the year end golf trip. Parent volunteers for year end field trip.
HOCKEY SKILLS 8-1 Power Up! One trimester – One block
Fee: $60.00 to cover ice times and consumables.
Objectives: To prepare students for the fitness expectations placed on them during a hockey season/game and to evaluate and assess their skating stride and help them become a more technically sound and more powerful skater.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and self evaluation of projects, demonstration of sound skating techniques. Notebook and module test.
Required materials: Participants are expected to have a helmet, neck guard, elbow pads, skates, hockey stick, notebook and pens.
HOCKEY SKILLS 8-2 Back to the Basics Level II One trimester – One block
Fee: $100.00 to cover ice times and consumables.
Objectives: The “Back to the Basics” will give participants an opportunity to further enhance their basic skills and knowledge base of hockey both from an individual player perspective and a team perspective.
Evaluation: Rubric, demonstration of sound basic skills such as shooting and scoring, checking, passing and puck control. Notebook and module test.
Required materials: Participants are expected to have a full set of hockey equipment, notebook and pens.
HOME ECONOMICS 8 Introduction to Food Basics
One trimester – One block (For Students who have not taken Foods in Grade 7)
Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food
Objectives: To demonstrate an understanding of kitchen safety regarding the safe handling of food, tools and equipment. To analyze Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. To apply knowledge and management skills in the planning, preparation, and evaluation of basic foods, including main courses, desserts and appetizers.
Evaluation: A written exam, several written assignments, rubric and self evaluation of laboratories.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by fee. Duotang and pen supplied by student.
HOME ECONOMICS 8 Basic Baking
One trimester – One block (Students should have taken an Introduction to Food Basics if they have not taken it in Grade 7)
Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food.
Objectives: To develop an understanding of basic baking ingredients by combining them in a variety of ways to make cookies, cakes, muffins and biscuits
Evaluation: Rubric and self evaluation of laboratories. Includes several written assignments and quizzes.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by fee. Duotang and pen supplied by student.
HOME ECONOMICS 8 Canadian Heritage Foods
One trimester – One block (Students should have taken Introduction to Food Basics if they have not taken it in Grade 7)
Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food.
Objectives: Students become aware of how food in Canada today reflects the country’s history and origins by examining food patterns and customs, and also by analyzing and preparing ethnic foods.
Evaluation: Rubric and self evaluation laboratories. Several written assignments and quizzes. Final cooking project to culminate the module based on ethnic foods in Canada.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by fee. Duotang and pen supplied by student.
HOME ECONOMICS 8 Meal Planning for Enjoyment
One trimester - One block (Students should take Introduction to Food Basics if they have not in Grade 7)
Fee: $30.00 to cover the cost of the food.
Objectives: To analyze and explain factors that contribute to successful meal planning. To demonstrate the importance of consumer skills in the selection of foods. To plan and prepare healthy meals including main courses, desserts and appetizers/snacks for varying lifestyles, available resources and special occasions. To understand factors that lead to poor eating habits and obesity.
Evaluation: Several written assignments and group projects. Rubric and self evaluation of kitchen laboratories.
Required Materials: Basic project materials covered by the fee. Duotanf and pen supplied by student.
HOME ECONOMICS 8 Sewing Basics Level 1
One trimester - One block (Same course as offered in Grade 7 options)
Fee: $20.00 to cover the cost of projects and equipment maintenance.
Objectives: To demonstrate safe use and care of sewing equipment. To demonstrate basic sewing, pressing and managing skills while assembling simple projects such as stuffed animals.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and self evaluation of projects.
Required Materials: Basic sewing kit (specific requirements to follow). Simple pattern and supplies for the project of choice to be ordered in class of which $10.00 is included in course fee. Notebook and pen supplied by student.
HOME ECONOMICS 8 Sewing Basics Level II
One trimester – One block (Students should taken have Sewing Basics Level I)
Fee: $20.00 to cover the cost of projects and equipment maintenance.
Objectives: Students learn to determine pattern size, choose a suitable pattern, prepare fabric and pattern for sewing, and apply these skills to the assembly of a simple garment such as boxer shorts or pajama pants.
Evaluation: Rubric, exemplar and self evaluation of projects; final project.
Required Materials: Notebook and pen. Simple pattern and supplies for a project of their choice to be ordered in class of which a portion of the cost is included in course fee.
INDUSTRIAL ARTS 8 Introduction to Woodworking
One trimester - One block
Fee: $20.00 to cover course materials.
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To learn and apply skills necessary to prepare and finish small wood projects.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of projects which may include puzzles, dinosaur skeletons, and two or three dimensional objects.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.
INDUSTRIAL ARTS 8 Building Construction
One trimester - One block (It is recommended that student has taken a previous woodworking course)
Fee: $30.00 to cover cost of course materials.
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To learn and apply skills necessary to design, prepare and finish simple furniture pieces.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of projects which may include items such as end tables, night stands, stools, chairs, coffee tables, and book shelves.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.
INDUSTRIAL ARTS 8 Designer Storage Boxes
One trimester – One block
Fee: $20.00 to cover cost of course materials.
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To learn and apply skills necessary to prepare and finish small wooden storage boxes.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of two different styles of storage boxes.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.
INDUSTRIAL ARTS 8 Scroll Saw Portraits
One trimester – One block
Fee: $20.00 to cover cost of course materials.
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To use digital photography to create an image that can be used as a pattern to be put on wood and then cut out.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of at least three different scroll saw portraits.
Required Materials: Notebook and pencil.
INDUSTRIAL ARTS 8 Vehicle Design
One trimester – One block
Fee: $15.00 to cover cost of basic course materials
Objectives: To learn safe and effective use of hand and power tools. To learn and apply skills necessary to design, prepare and finish a wooden model car.
Evaluation: Written assignments and safety test, rubric and self evaluation of projects which will include two working CO2 cars.
Required Materials: Pencil and notebook.
STUDY SKILLS
One trimester – One block
Fee: $10.00 to cover course materials (this includes a memory stick)
Objectives: Students will focus on understanding themselves as learners while developing study and organizational skills. Extra class time and additional teacher help will be given to students to assist them to meet deadlines for classroom assignments and tests.
Evaluation: Marks will be based on participation, effort and completion of classroom assignments.
Required Materials: Pen, pencil, eraser, ruler, and scissors.
One trimester - One block
Fee: $20.00
Objectives: Students will acquire a broader appreciation and understanding of fashion by examining the history of fashion from the ancient world to the 19th Century, as well as trends associated with specific eras, cultures and geographic regions. Students will also examine fashion in the 20th and 21st Centuries from both international and Canadian perspectives. Students will examine and apply drawing techniques specific to the field with respect to gender, age and lifestyle; techniques used in the pattern rendering process, designer sketch techniques and methods, methods used when working with colour and techniques used in layout and composition.
Evaluation: Demonstration of knowledge and skills through the development of a personal portfolio and performance in class.
Required Materials: Portfolio book, drawing felts, pencils, and fabric swatches.
