Thank you for taking the time to participate in our survey identifying barriers to productivity in the engineering construction industry. The survey will help identify the most important barriers to productivity that we as an industry need to focus on immediately in order to improve the competitiveness of our industry. A follow on from this will be the set up of working groups that will focus on the areas that are identified from responses.
It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire.
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. It is very important for us to learn your opinions.
Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Dr Georgette Banham via the ECIA for more information on the survey and next steps at [email protected]
Thank you very much for your time and support. Please start with the survey now by clicking on the Continue button below.

2. INDIRECT FACTORS 2.1 New Build 2.1.1 Pre - Construction
|
|
Please rank (1 [top priority] to 6 [lowest priority]) the following in order of main barriers to productivity for the pre-construction phase (i.e from project inception through to site set up): |
| |
Contracting Strategy (e.g unsuitable risk allocation, late involvement of sub contractors) and Procurement Strategy (e.g quality issues, lack of end to end responsibility, late involvement) |
| | Industrial Relations Strategy (e.g recruitment, confidence in management, trust, cultural awareness, support) and Project Organisation (e.g no project induction, collaboration and communication issues, teams not integrated) |
| | Structured Project Management Methods (e.g project planning)and Risk Management (e.g failing to report risks at appropriate times) |
| | Temporary Works Planning (e.g unsuitable layout, insufficient space, planning/ preparation) |
| | Construction Philosophy (e.g restricted access / use of construction knowledge, unable to maximise off site working including pre-fabrication and modularisation) |
| | Contract Management (e.g understanding of conditions, unclear roles and responsibilities), Scope (e.g definition and unclear scope boundaries, information contraints) and Change Environment (e.g changes to design) |
| |
|
|
|
|
Please rank (1 [top priority] to 5 [lowest priority]) the following in order of main barriers to productivity in the construction phase i.e initial site set up to project completion: |
| |
Engineering (e.g late changes to design on site) and Increased Scope of Works |
| | Industrial Relations Strategy, Shared goals (e.g lack of team building and project orientation) and Workforce Disengagment |
| | Work Area Control (e.g stacking up of trades, difficulties maintaining accurate and achievable construction programme) |
| | Conflict between engineering, construction & project management and lack of structured construction management methods |
| | Risk management at Project and Site Team level (e.g failing to report risks at appropriate times) |
| |

2.2 Repair and Maintenance
|
|
Please rank (1 [top priority] to 6 [lowest priority]) the following in order of main barriers to productivity during repair and maintenance works: |
| |
Contracting Strategy (e.g unsuitable risk allocation) |
| | Industrial Relations Strategy (e.g shared goals, team building and project orientation) |
| | Risk Management, Increased Scope and Obtaining Authorisation to Work |
| | Accuracy of Documentation (e.g Asbuilt drawings availability) |
| | Structured Project Management Methods (e.g Project planning) |
| | Quality of Materials / Replacement Parts |
