This is part 2 of the survey on the introduction of a Pollutant Release and Transfer Register.

[What it is]
A database of potentially hazardous substances and/or pollutants released and transferred off-site for treatment or disposal.

[How it works]
Industrial and business facilities quantify and report the amount of substances and pollutants released and transferred off-site. A PRTR may also include estimates of releases from diffuse sources, such as transport and end use of products. Following this, the data is checked and compiled by environmental authorities. It is then made accessible to the public online, in hardcopy, or in CD-rom form.

[Benefits]
PRTRs allow everyone to find out the sources and quantities of substances emitted in their vicinity, which allows them to put pressure on firms to reduce pollution. This is ultimately beneficial to the local environment and public health. PRTRs also provide both information and incentive for facilities, governments, and environmental groups to act to reduce pollution.
