This questionnaire was developed at the University of Cologne (Germany) for a linguistic research project concerning foreign words in the English language. The aim of the questionnaire is not to proof your special knowledge about a certain language, rather to find out about the usage of certain words in American English.


The questionnaire is divided into four parts.

Part 1 contains some formal questions about yourself – these data are only for statistical purposes and will be kept strictly confidential.

In Part 2 you will find different definitions for a word and you are asked to decide which definition is appropriate. I would also like to know whether you would use the word or have used the word before.

In Part 3 you are asked to define some words either in sentences, phrases or with just one similar English word.

Part 4 consists of several sentences in which one word is missing. You have to choose the word with the correct spelling.
You will also find instructions on how to complete the parts below.
