Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. Some examples of upcycling include painting old unwanted furniture to give it a new lease of life, using old corks to make a pinboard, making bags out of old sails, turning old tyres into chairs or planters.
When an item is upcycled, the material isn't broken down. It may be refashioned, like cutting a t-shirt into strips of yarn but it’s still made of the same materials as when you started. Recycling takes consumer materials (mostly plastic, paper, metal and glass) and breaks them down so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality.
Upcycling and recycling reduces the volume of discarded materials and waste being sent to landfill or incinerated each year. It also reduces the need for production using new or raw materials which in turn means a reduction in air pollution, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
