Across the country, adults are openly embracing toys, games, cartoons, collectibles, and cozy childhood rituals—not as a joke, but as a genuine part of their daily lives. The rise of adult play marks a fundamental shift in how adults navigate burnout and daily anxiety. In previous decades, adult leisure was often restricted to formal exercise, traditional hobbies, or passive media consumption. Today, adults are granting themselves permission to engage in unstructured, low-pressure play purely for the joy of it.
Key takeaways from our national study include:
Kidulting is a mainstream adult routine: Most American adults regularly participate in playful or nostalgic hobbies, with only a small minority abstaining completely.
Stress relief and mental safety drive participation: Adults prioritize play primarily to unwind, recharge, and escape daily responsibilities without expectation of performance or monetization.
Digital games serve as daily cognitive breaks: Mobile and computer gaming represent the most frequent form of play, functioning as controlled bedtime rituals and workday mental resets.
Spending remains highly modest and intentional: Despite high market visibility for collectibles, most adults participate through low-cost or existing items, keeping monthly spending strictly budgeted.
Social stigma around adult play has largely collapsed: The vast majority of adults feel comfortable sharing their playful hobbies with friends, partners, and colleagues without fear of judgment.
Nostalgia functions as emotional support: Reconnecting with childhood media, games, and characters offers a sense of safety and control when modern life feels overwhelming.
This study surveyed U.S. adults ages 18 and older to explore attitudes, behaviors, and motivations related to kidulting. Responses were collected through an online survey of a nationally distributed sample fielded from November 13 to November 15, 2025.
Kidulting refers to the growing cultural trend of adults actively participating in playful, nostalgic, or childlike hobbies—such as playing board games, collecting figures, watching animated media, crafting, and playing mobile games—for stress relief and enjoyment.
According to the QuestionPro Kidulting Study, adults engage in play primarily to manage modern stress and anxiety, escape daily work responsibilities, and reconnect with safe, comforting memories from childhood without the pressure of performance or monetization.
Adult play is now fully mainstream. The national study indicates that the vast majority of U.S. adults engage in playful or nostalgic activities regularly, with only a small minority reporting that they never participate.
Despite high market visibility for luxury collectibles, most adults spend modestly. The study shows that the majority of adults keep physical hobby budgets low and spend little to nothing on digital in-app gaming purchases, prioritizing low-cost or free entertainment.
Top activities include playing board games and brain teasers, mobile and computer gaming, watching animated shows and retro movies, working on creative crafts, and collecting toys or fandom merchandise.
Social stigma has decreased significantly. Most study respondents express high comfort openly sharing their playful hobbies with friends, family, and coworkers, viewing it as a normal component of modern self-care.
Mobile games serve as quick, accessible mental breaks during the workday or as winding-down rituals before sleep. Players view mobile gaming as a controlled, low-stress source of satisfaction rather than an addictive burden.
Both. While many adults reserve play as personal "me time" to unwind, substantial numbers share activities with partners, children, and friends through game nights, co-op gaming, and shared media viewing.
