Description of the research and your participation

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Dr. R. David Lamie and Ms. Lori Dickes. The purpose of this research is to better understand how rural communities are approaching planning and investment decisions for information and communications technologies.

Your participation will involve completing and submitting an on-line survey and possibly answering follow-up questions via e-mail or telephone.

The amount of time required for your participation will be approximately 15 minutes.

Risks and discomforts


There are no known risks associated with this research.

Potential benefits

Your participation in this study will benefit your community and other rural communities by allowing you to make comparisons about your interest and willingness to take measures to enhance Internet connectivity and effective use in your community.

Protection of confidentiality


We will do everything we can to protect your privacy. Your identity will not be revealed in any publication that might result from this study.

Voluntary participation


Your participation in this research study is voluntary. You may choose not to participate and you may withdraw your consent to participate at any time. You will not be penalized in any way should you decide not to participate or to withdraw from this study.

Within this survey the term ICT is frequently used. For the purpose of this survey ICT is defined as follows:

The term ICT (information and communications technology) is a broad term that effectively includes all forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and use information. It can include any communication device or application, including telephones, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, and regular and advanced bandwidth infrastructure.
