In this part of the experiment you will be presented with six hypothetical scenarios. Each scenario will be followed by few statements. Please indicate the extent to which you agree/disagree with each statement.

Imagine that you start a new course in the area of study you have never had classes in. You attend all the lectures and read the assigned material. When the teacher gives you the first assignment back, you realize you only got a D. Same happens with second assignment and group project – you get a low C and a D.

I would be humiliated and ashamed.
I didn’t try hard enough.
I wouldn’t lose hope for future success.
I would try to approach next assignement from a different angle.
I would give up and stop studying for this course.
I think I am not good at this subject.

On the next assignment you receive a B2.
strongly disagree disagree slightly disagree slightly agree agree strongly agree no answer
I was lucky.
With more effort I finally got it right.

You are taking a new class and you are enjoying it. You feel you know the material pretty well, so you study a moderate amount of time for the first assessment. You feel you did quite well, though there were some questions you didn’t know answers to. You get your test back and the grade you received is F.

strongly disagree disagree slightly disagree slightly agree agree strongly agree no answer
Try another learning strategy for another test.
Stop trying to study.
I should have put more effort into preparation.
Obstacles don’t make me feel down, they motivate me.
I would feel worthless.
The test was unfair.

In your course one of the assignments is a group project. You have been randomly assigned to group A with two people you don’t know. During week one one of your teammates – Mary, eavesdrops and uses the idea belonging to another group. In the second week she acts rude towards the other person in the group. Later on, she is very late for the group meeting and has no excuse for it.

She will always act this way.
I wouldn’t take it personally.
She is not a bad person, she just did not behave well in couple of situations.
Maybe if I try to approach her in a different way, she will be more responsible.
I would try to punish her for irresponsibility.
I would be angry.

Durig week 4, Mary shows up to the meeting and is very nice to everybody, smiles a lot and is very helpful in the presentation preparation.

People change, I will give her another shot.
There is something suspicious about this behaviour. Maybe she has a hidden agenda.

You have met Alan on couple occassions. During your first encounter you saw him sharing his snack with a hungry classmate. Next time, at the party, he went to buy more beer, when no one else wanted to go out in the rain. Another time, he took a blame for another person. When you saw him on the street the other day you noticed he yelled at the person selling magazines.

I would try to explain to him that he did not behave well.
Alan is a good person, he wouldn’t be rude unless prompted. The seller must have provocked him.
People behave differently in various situations. Nobody is either good or bad all the time.
I would feel indifferent.
I would still be friends with him. One setback doesn’t mean he is a bad person.
I would feel that is not typical of him.

Imagine you are a teacher. You work hard to prepare the material for classes and you put a lot of energy to teaching. A student comes unprepared for the first tutorial – she didn’t read the assigned article. When you are assessing the short essays your class wrote, you realize that she did really bad. On class test she got a D.
strongly disagree disagree slightly disagree slightly agree agree strongly agree no answer
I wouldn’t take it personally.
She is disrespectful and stupid
I would fail her.
I would talk to her and encourage her to study.
She could succeed if only she tried harder.
I would feel that nothing can be done to help her.

You are taking a new course and so far you have been doing quite well. Professor announces a new assignement that won‘t be graded. He gives you a choice - you can either write an essay on material you already know or read couple new articles and take a quiz. The first one would make you look good, since you already know the material, but the second one would allow you to learn something new.
strongly disagree disagree slightly disagree slightly agree agree strongly agree no answer
I would choose the second one, I like the challenge.
I want to avoid looking dumb.
I want to feel and look smart.
I would choose the first one to play it safe.
I want to learn more in the topic, even if I might make mistakes.
I want to prove how good I am at this subject.
