Exit Survey

Hello:
You are invited to participate in our survey examining reasons for attending an HBCU. In this survey, participants will be asked to complete a survey that asks questions about demographics, reasons for attending Cheyney University, and feelings about racial identity. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete the questionnaire. You must provide your student ID number to participate in the study. Your student ID will be used to verify the number of semesters you have been enrolled at Cheyney University.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. The incentive to participate is a random drawing for a $50 VISA gift card, which will be made at the end of the Fall Semester. There will be four lucky winners. You must provide your e-mail address at the end of the survey to be entered into the drawing. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point. It is very important for us to learn your opinions.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Julianne Lewis at 267-471-0493 or by email at the email address specified below.

Thank you very much for your time and support. Please start with the survey now by clicking on the Continue button below.

* As an African American, life in America is good for me
* I think of myself primarily as an American, and seldom as a member of a racial group
* Too many Blacks “glamorize” the drug trade and fail to see opportunities that don’t involve crime
* I go through periods when I am down on myself because I am Black
* As a multiculturalist, I am connected to many groups (Hispanics, Asian-Americans, Whites, Jews, gays & lesbians, etc.)
* I have a strong feeling of hatred and disdain for all White people
* I see and think about things from an Afrocentric perspective
* When I walk into a room, I always take note of the racial make-up of the people around me
* I am not so much a member of a racial group, as I am an American
* I sometimes struggle with negative feelings about being Black
Strongly Disagree Disagree Disagree Somewhat Neither Agree or Disagree Agree Somewhat Agree Strongly Agree
* My relationship with God plays an important role in my life
* Blacks place more emphasis on having a good time than on hard work
* I believe that only those Black people who accept an Afrocentric perspective can truly solve the race problem in America
* I hate the White community and all that it represents
* When I have a chance to make a new friend, issues of race and ethnicity seldom play a role in who that person might be
* I believe it is important to have both a Black identity and a multicultural perspective, which is inclusive of everyone (e.g., Asians, Latinos, gays & lesbians, Jews, Whites, etc.)
* When I look in the mirror at my Black image, sometimes I do not feel good about what I see
* If I had to put a label on my identity, it would be “American,” and not African American
* When I read the newspaper or a magazine, I always look for articles and stories that deal with race and ethnic issues
