Larissa Grundmanis, an undergraduate student at Michigan Technological University, is conducting a research study to evaluate the relationship between those who are more extroverted, those who are more introverted, and those who self-harm on a college campus. You are being asked to complete this survey because it has been indicated that you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate field of study and that you are between the ages of 18 and 29.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This study is part of the project entitled Examining the Relationship Between Introversion, Extroversion, and Self-Harm on a College Campus. This project will entail one to disclose information related to one’s personality and self-injurious behavior, if any exists. The purpose of the study is to determine the relation between certain personality traits and self-injurious behavior, in hopes to better aid those who are affected by self-injurious behavior. Results of the study will be disseminated as articles in academic research journals.
PROCEDURES
If you volunteer to participate in this study, you will be asked to do the following things:
You will be asked to answer several questionnaires regarding your personality and experience with self-injurious behaviors. The entire survey should take no more than 90 minutes.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS
This study involves no foreseeable serious risks. We ask that you try to answer all questions; however, if there are any items that make you uncomfortable or that you would prefer to skip, please leave the answer blank. Your responses are assured to be anonymous and no data will be collected linking any response to yourself.
In the event of physical and/or mental injury resulting from participation in this research project,
Michigan Technological University does not provide any medical, hospitalization or other insurance for participants in this research study, nor will Michigan Technological University provide any medical treatment or compensation for any injury sustained as a result of participation in this research study, except as required by law.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO SUBJECTS AND/OR TO SOCIETY
You will not receive any direct benefits from participating in this study. The research is expected to benefit the wider community by providing greater information one aspects of one’s self-injurious behaviors.
COMPENSATION FOR PARTICIPATION
In exchange for your participation, you will receive 1 hour of class credit. If you choose to withdraw from the study, you will still be eligible for the class credit. Withdrawal from the study will have no effect on your class grade or class standing.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Any information that is obtained in connection with this study and that can be identified with you will remain confidential and will be disclosed only with your permission or as required by law. Confidentiality will be maintained by means of a coding system. When you arrive in the lab, you will receive a subject ID that will be used to label your data. Your name will not be attached to any of your data. All data will be maintained on password-protected computers and/or kept in a locked drawer in the Safety, Technology, and Attention Research Laboratory.
No one will be able to identify you or your answers, and no one will know whether or not you participated in the study. Credit for participation will be given automatically when the survey is completed. However, if you wish to withdraw from this survey at any time, you may do so and will still receive credit for participation. Individuals from the Institutional Review Board may inspect these records. Should the data be published, no individual information will be disclosed.
PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL
Participation is voluntary. If you volunteer to be in this study, you may withdraw at any time without consequences of any kind or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. You may also refuse to answer any questions you do not want to answer. There is no penalty if you withdraw from the study and you will not lose any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
