Consent to Act as a Research Subject
Experience and Helping Behavior in the Workplace from an Interpersonal Perspective
You are being asked to participate in a research study. Before you give your consent to be a volunteer, it is important that you read the following information and ask as many questions as necessary to be sure you understand what you will be asked to do.
Investigator: David Rozanski, graduate student in the Department of Psychology at San Diego State University, is conducting this study along with the supervision of Dr. Mark Ehrhart, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology.
Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between individual differences in work experience and the occurrence of helping behaviors within a work group. Approximately 160 employees from community colleges, a San Diego-based market research firm, and several organizations covering various industries (over age 18) are being recruited to participate in this study.
Description of the Study: If you agree to participate, you will be asked to rate yourself and other members/co-workers in your department on ten items addressing different examples of helping. You will also be asked to provide an estimate of the amount of time you have spent working in several areas.
In addition, you will be asked about your age, gender, and department name. The entire study will take less than ten minutes to complete and will be administered in the form of an electronic survey. The questionnaires will be delivered electronically via email to the entire group, but will be completed individually at your own pace. After you complete the questionnaire, your responses will be sent to a secure server accessible by the investigator.
Risk or Discomfort: It is not expected that you will experience any discomfort as a result of participation. If you do feel uncomfortable about participating in the study, you may discontinue participation at any time.
Benefits of the Study: It is not expected that you will benefit directly from participation in this study. However, it is hoped that we may learn more about individual perceptions of the workplace which may affect work performance.
Confidentiality: Confidentiality will be maintained to the extent allowed by law. All of your responses will be kept on a secure server. Only the persons directly related to this study (i.e., the investigator and his supervisor) will have access to this data. Federal regulations require that the Institutional Review Board (IRB) periodically review all approved and continuing projects that involve human subjects. To ensure that your rights as a subject are being protected in this study, it is possible that representatives of the IRB may come to this research site to inspect study records. A code number will be used in place of your name on all research records. This code number will be linked to your name only via a separate master list. This list will then be destroyed at the time of completion of data collection.
Incentives to Participate: You will not be paid to participate in this study.
Costs and/or compensation for participation: There is no cost to you for participating in this study.
Voluntary nature of participation: Participation in this study is voluntary. Your choice of whether or not to participate will not influence your future relations with San Diego State University. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your consent and to stop your participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are allowed.
Questions about the study: If you have questions about the research at any time, you may contact David Rozanski at [email protected]. If you have any questions about your rights as a participant in this study, you may contact the Institutional Review Board at San Diego State University for information. The telephone number of the Board is 619-594-6622. You may also write the Board at [email protected].
Consent to Participate:
You indicate that by continuing on to complete the survey you have read the information in this document and have had a chance to ask any questions you have about the study. Completing the survey also indicates that you agree to be in the study and have been told that you can change your mind and withdraw your consent to participate at any time. Please print a copy of this consent form for your records. You have been told that by completing the survey you are not giving up any of your legal rights.

Thank you for your participation in this particular research study. I am conducting this research as part of my master’s thesis at San Diego State University. The following section will serve as an explanation of what the study is about.
The purpose of the study is to better understand the phenomenon of helping behaviors in a cohesive work group, and specifically, how experience plays a role in these behaviors. Understanding how experience influences perceptions of others regarding their ability to help or their desire to be helped in the workplace can open up communication amongst employees of varying experience levels.
During the course of the survey, you will be asked to enter your name in addition to the names of the individuals you will be rating. Please be assured that after the data has been collected, your name will be replaced with a unique identifier to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Thank you again for your participation.
David Rozanski
