National Blood Transfusion Committee Teleconference – 4 September 2015 Attachment 1 – Draft Questions for Group AB Plasma Survey Background Shortfalls of group AB plasma components may occur from time to time. This is not unexpected given the very high clinical demand for plasma components of this blood group relative to the proportion of blood donors who are group AB. Only 3% of Australian blood donors are group AB; however, group AB plasma components represent approximately 8% of the total clinical fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and cryoprecipitate supplied by the Blood Service; however, whilst the demand for group AB plasma components is very high, the demand for group AB red cells is low. Thus, the Blood Service needs to employ a range of strategies to recruit and retain group AB donors and maximise manufacturing efficiency to keep pace with demand whilst, at the same time, avoiding unnecessary donor red cell losses. In addition, concerns regarding the higher risk of TRALI with the use of plasma from female donors, has necessitated a further reduction in the pool of donors whose blood is suitable for the manufacture of clinical plasma component to male only donors.. The clinical demand for group AB plasma components is continuing to increase at a rate that is disproportionate to that of all other groups. In the 4-year period from 2008/09 to 2011/12, the supply of group AB clinical FFP increased by 8.9%. In comparison, the total supply of clinical FFP (all groups) only increased by 4.1% during the same period. Some of the reason for this increase is known but not fully understood. The National Blood Transfusion Committee proposes to develop a clinical framework for the use of group AB plasma components to guide consistency of practice, with an aim to ensuring a safe and adequate supply of group AB plasma components and equity of access for those patients who require these components. Aim The aim of this survey is to gain information regarding current practice in the use of group AB plasma components in order to inform the development of the clinical framework for its use. The Blood Service, at the request of the National Blood transfusion Comitte, are conducting this survey. The survey will be in XXX sections..
