JIT Adoption and Organization Performance of the Malaysian Manufacturing Companies

Survey Questionnaire

We are undergraduate students of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) presently pursuing a Degree course in Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) Accounting. The purpose of this survey is to conduct a research to determine the effects of implementing just-in-time (JIT) in Malaysian manufacturing companies. JIT can be defined as an approach that involves a continuous commitment to the pursuit of excellence in all phases of manufacturing systems design and operations. This questionnaire would be preferred to be answered by production manager. However, it would be answered by anyone else related to the production area.

Instructions:
1)There are THREE (3) sections in this questionnaire. Please answer ALL questions in ALL sections to the best of your knowledge.
2)The contents of this questionnaire will be kept strictly confidential and used solely for academic purposes only.

h)Preventive maintenance program
i)Line balancing, where every employee at all stations is doing approximately equal amount of work.
j)Education programs about JIT
Never Used Occasionally Used Used Half the Time Usually Used Always Used
k)Level schedules, where the use of all parts in materials is as evenly distributed over time as possible
l)Stable cycle rate, where the time between completion of two units of production is constant
m)Frequency of delivery of raw materials from vendors
n)Group technology, where group of dissimilar machines are set up in a cell so they can be set up on the same job with little transport distance between group
o)A program to improve quality of the product
p)A program to improve quality of the process used to make the product

This section seeks your opinion regarding the company performance in the recent 2 years. Respondents are asked to indicate the extent to which the company performance by using the 5-level Likert scale. Please circle one number per statement.

Please use the following scale to indicate the extent of the company performance.
Evaluate the company performance in the recent 2 years:

Quality-based Performance
Significant Increase (50 ≤ x ≤ 100%) Moderate Increase (0 ≤ x < 50%) No Changes (0%) Moderate Decrease (0 ≤ x < 50%) Significant Decrease (50 ≤ x ≤ 100%)
a)Amount of defect goods
b)Rework (repetition of certain parts of production process due to imperfection)
c)Non-durability of company product
d)Customer dissatisfaction (e.g. customer complaints, sales return etc.)

Time-based Performance
Significant Increase (50 ≤ x ≤ 100%) Moderate Increase (0 ≤ x < 50%) No Changes (0%) Moderate Decrease (0 ≤ x < 50%) Significant Decrease (50 ≤ x ≤ 100%)
e)Queue Times (the waiting time for a single product to be produced)
f)Move Times (the time from one process to another process, e.g. from assembly process to packaging process)
g)Machine Downtime ( time for maintenance when machine breakdown)
h)Lot Sizes (size of production runs/ amount of products produced for each machine set up)
i)Throughput Time / product cycle time
j)Set up time

Inventory Reduction
Significant Increase (50 ≤ x ≤ 100%) Moderate Increase (0 ≤ x < 50%) No Changes (0%) Moderate Decrease (0 ≤ x < 50%) Significant Decrease (50 ≤ x ≤ 100%)
k)Raw Material (reduction of holding of raw material in the production process)
l)Work in Process (reduction of holding of work in process in the production process)
m)Finished Goods (reduction of holding of finished goods in the company warehouse)

Please use the following scale to indicate the extent of the employee performance.
Evaluate the employee performance in the recent 2 years:

Involvement of Employees in Production Processes
