PARTICIPATION INFORMATION

Managing professional competency problems in counselling students: the experience of tertiary counsellor educators in Australia.

Background and Aims

This research is exploring what is happening in tertiary counselling programs in Australia in regards to students who are manifesting competency problems. It will examine how staff assess if a student is having competency problems; what formal documentation is in place informing students of competency problems; how those problems are systemically remediated; the outcomes of remediation; and withdrawal processes that may be in place (or not). This research will provide a window to understanding how counsellor educators view and act in their roles as gate-keepers for the profession, and how the teaching and learning of students presenting with competency problems can be enhanced.

What are the benefits of this study?

The benefits of this study promise to enhance the selection, management, remediation, and withdrawal processes for counsellor education students in postgraduate counsellor education programs in Tertiary institutions in Australia. It is hoped that the gate-keeping role of counsellor education staff will be strengthened and the quality of graduates from the programs increased. This has benefits for the program, the profession, and of course the future clients of our graduates.
