Parent-Child Conflict

Welcome to "Parent-Child Conflict," a web-based study that examines characteristics of parent-child conflict interactions. Before taking part in this study, please read the consent form below and click on the "I Agree" button at the bottom of the page if you understand the statements and freely consent to participate in the study.

Consent Form

This study involves a web-based survey designed to measure aspects of parent-child conflict. The study is being conducted by Dr. Jackie Nelson of the University of Texas at Dallas, and it has been approved by the University of Texas at Dallas Institutional Review Board. No deception is involved, and the study involves no more than minimal risk to participants (i.e., the level of risk encountered in daily life).

Participation in the study typically takes 10 minutes and is strictly anonymous. Over the next few days, participants should be aware of any arguments or disagreements with the child where opposing viewpoints are expressed by both parties. Participants will complete a single questionnaire soon after experiencing the conflict interaction with their 5- to 8-year-old child. This is not a study of parents’ typical responses during conflict, but rather a study of specific behaviors that took place during this particular conflict interaction. Thus, it is important that participants complete the measure as soon after the parent-child conflict as possible.

All responses are treated as confidential, and in no case will responses from individual participants be identified. Rather, all data will be pooled and published in aggregate form only. Participants should be aware, however, that the experiment is not being run from a "secure" https server of the kind typically used to handle credit card transactions, so there is a small possibility that responses could be viewed by unauthorized third parties (e.g., computer hackers).

Many individuals find participation in this study enjoyable, and no adverse reactions have been reported thus far. Students will receive one SONA research credit. Basic contact information will be requested at the end of the survey so that researchers can pair responses with SONA system crediting. Contact information will not be linked to questionnaire responses and will be securely stored with the principal investigator. Individuals may only participate in the study once.

Participation is voluntary, refusal to take part in the study involves no penalty or loss of benefits to which participants are otherwise entitled, and participants may withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which they are otherwise entitled.

If participants have further questions about this study, they may contact the principal investigator, Dr. Jackie Nelson, at (972) 883-4478; Participants who want more information about their rights as a participant or who want to report a research related injury may contact Sanaz Okhovat, Senior Director of the Office of Research Integrity, at (972) 883-4579.

If you are 18 years of age or older, understand the statements above, and freely consent to participate in the study, click on the "I Agree" button to begin the experiment.

Think about the conflict you recently had with your child. It may have occurred at one point in time, or it may have been interrupted and restarted at various points throughout the day. If repeated conflict interactions occurred, please think of the longest or most significant portion of the conflict when answering the questions below.
