Suppose you were interested in an intermediate subject such as Cosmology, or in a subject that is useful for physicists but is not physics in itself, such as Statistics. Would you be willing to take a “reading course” on that subject? That would be listed in the course offerings as a course, but it would not actually have any lectures or homeworks. However, there would be a mailing list, and a curriculum to be followed, as well as a text book. The instructor would only be in charge of checking the syllabus every semester and sending an initial welcome email at the beginning of the semester.
