Polar Bear Exhibition Survey
We at London Zoo are proposing a new world class polar bear exhibit, to be installed in Spring 2013. This will be a monumental event not only for London Zoo, but also for the South East region and UK economy as a whole.
The polar bear has become a symbol not only for climate change but for environmental conservation, and so we believe that the exhibit will help raise awareness for environmental issues. Particularly, in light of the success and interest in the BBC’s 2011 series on the ‘Frozen Planet.’
Judging by past experience from other Zoos around the world, polar bears are one of the most popular exhibits and enjoyed both by adults and children, for instance Knut in Berlin Zoo (insert picture).
We plan to welcome two orphan polar bear cubs for the duration of 10 years, before they are re-released into the wild, giving visitors ample opportunity to witness these remarkable creatures.
Through preliminary surveys, we believe that the influx of visitors to London Zoo could help boost tourism in the local area, ensuring widespread economic benefits to businesses across Central London.
Full consideration has also been given to the potential costs of installing a polar bear exhibit, especially due to the unique challenges in enclosure design, and dietary requirements of polar bears.
The purpose of this survey is to determine whether Zoo visitors would be willing to pay an additional supplement on top of the original ticket price to fund the Polar Bear Exhibit and to determine what level of commitment visitors would be willing to contribute.
