Do you know about the existence of the religion-related superstitions in the Orthodox religion?

yes

no

If yes, do you apply any of them in your everyday or spiritual life?

yes

no

don’t know

I think the main reason of the emergence and dissemination of the religion-related superstitions is:

religious ignorance

heathen beliefs

Soviet heritage

religious literature

(superstitions about religious feast days). Usually I think that:

you mustn’t swim in the bodies of water after the Feast Day of Ilya the Prophet (August 2);

if you seal up windows before the Intercession, there won’t be warm in the house;

on the remembrance of the dead in joyful prayer day (the Radonitsa) self-murderers may be remembered; people should visit cemeteries before 12 p.m. because later the souls of the deceased are already not there;

on the Holy Cross Day «autumn moves towards winter, it pushes warmth and pulls cold»;

on Candlemas Day winter meets summer;

the cause of the Fall of Adam and Eva was that they had eaten an unconsecrated apple before the Transfiguration.

(superstitions about sacraments). I think that:

a baby must be christened to avoid an evil eye;

at christening it is better to receive another name unknown to other people;

the priest must tear the paper with the list of sins or they won’t be absolved;

the Communion is also the “purification” of the organism;

the Communion raises hemoglobin;

you mustn’t kiss anyone after the Commution not to lose God’s grace;

the Anointing is the last deathbed sacrament;

the Marriage service is a guarantee that the spouses will live a long and happy life.

(superstitions about religious ceremonies). I think that:

the candle put on the candle stand which fell or died out means misfortune;

you should make the sign of cross over the mouth when yawning;

all service lists have different efficiency (proskomide, liturgy, special-ordered, moleben);

if people alive are mentioned in the pray for the repose of the dead soul, it can make them harm;

if the holy water from different churches is mixed, it gains more power;

you shouldn’t pick up a lost cross in the street – you may take up “other person’s cross” (problems and deceases);

favourite things of the dead and some products may be put into the coffin; it is possible to take meals at the grave;

there are thematic icons: at some of them people pray for health, at others they pray for money, etc.
