What is the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)?

CCPA stands for California Consumers Protection Act 2018. The state of California recently passed this personal data protection law in response to the increased role of consumers personal information in contemporary business practices. The bill also aims to cover the implications surrounding the collection, use, and protection of personal information.

To whom CCPA is applicable?

The CCPA applies to all the companies in the world if:

It collects data of California residents,

If a company (it’s parent or subsidiary company) exceeds at least one of the three thresholds mentioned below;

  1. Has an annual gross revenue of at least $25 million
  2. Collects personal information of minimum 50K California data subjects or devices every year
  3. 50% or more of their income is generated through selling personal information of the California residents

Non-Compliance

Non-compliance with CCPA puts your business at risk of huge fines. If you fail to reveal the reason of being incompliant even after getting a 30-day notification, you will be penalised. Either the attorney general can initiate a civil case against you or you need to pay a fine of $75000 against each intentional violation, and $2500 for each non-intentional violation.
