Age Verification and COPPA compliance

Age verification or age gate is used to restrict access to digital content from those who are not appropriately-aged. With QuestionPro age verification control on surveys, you can restrict access for under aged respondents from age-appropriate content like alcohol and tobacco content, adult-oriented content, video games with objectionable content, and also to remain compliant with online privacy laws that regulate collection of personal information (PII) from minors.

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) is a United States federal law, , enacted October 21, 1998. (COPPA Compliance - FAQ)

The act, effective April 21, 2000, applies to the online collection of personal information by persons or entities under U.S. jurisdiction about children under 13 years of age, including children outside the U.S. if the website or service is U.S.-based.It details what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online, including restrictions on the marketing of those under 13.

Go to: Select Survey » Edit » Settings

Enable the toggle for Age Verification and save.

You can click on the edit(pencil) icon to update age verification settings:

• Age: By default, age is set to 18. You can set the age between the ages of 3 and 30 and only respondents above the set age will be allowed to access and respond to your survey.
• Button text: You can update the button text.
• Failed verification: Failed verification is set to terminate the survey by default. You can choose to automatically redirect to any webpage too.

Respondents are asked to enter their date of birth on the survey. Age is calculated and if age is above the verification age set, respondents are allowed to start the survey. If failed, response will be terminated or redirected to the webpage that you have set up.

Yes. You can enable geolocation based age verification logic.

On the age verification popup, click on Geolocation Logic

You can now define the minimum age along with minimum age for the specific countries. For example, minimum age requirement for Spain, Portugal, and France, is 21 years and for India, it is 25 years. We can define as shown below.

We allow up to 5 logic statements for different age criteria. You can choose multiple countries in the country selection dropdown.

We identify respondents location based on IP address.

In this example, If respondents are from Spain, Portugal, or France, and they are older than 21 years, they will be able to access the survey.

If respondents are from India, and older than 25 years, they will be able to access the survey.

Respondents from anywhere else who don't match the locations set, they need to be abvove the age of 18 to access the survey.

Yes. Respondents will first be asked to select the language they want to answer the survey in. Once language selection is done, respondents will be asked to enter their date of birth and age verification will be executed. Translations can be updated under Edit » Languages page.

Yes. You can enable age verification for all new surveys in your account or also on the organization level.

You can enable age verification for all new surveys in your account under My Account » Survey Setting

If you wish to enable age verification for the entire organization, you can do so under Organization » Settings.
