Accessible Theme - 508 compliance

Accessibility can be viewed as the "ability to access" and benefit from a system or entity. The concept focuses on enabling access for people with disabilities, or enabling access through the use of assistive technology; however, research and development in accessibility brings benefits to everyone.

Go to: Surveys (Select Survey) » Edit » Design

For the classic or the focus layout, under Themes, scroll down and select the Accessible Theme and save.

For accessibility, we want to make the surveys as easy as possible to answer. Keeping the surveys simple should be the primary goal. To achive this, certain question types like drag and drop, image hotspot or heatmap, and complex questions like flex matrix, etc. aren't supported.

Settings like auto-advance and auto-submit along with tools like exit survey button are disabled on 508 compliant or accessible surveys to ease navigation through the survey.

Once accessible theme is enabled for a survey, we display accessibility icon on all question types that are accessibility compliant. This makes it very easy to identify question types that support accessibility when adding questions.

Go to: Surveys (Select Survey) » Edit » Add Question.

We recommend minimizing the use of images on surveys however, when required, images can be used along with alt-text for images. alt-text is required for images so screen-readers can read and explain what the image is about.

Guidelines for alt-text:

• Don't leave alt-text blank
• Alt-text should provide context and describe the image
• Avoid long alt-text. To describe the image in details, use presentation text and keep the alt-text short.

For all image supported questions, you will see the accessibility icon next to the image, click on the icon to update alt-text for these images.

If an image is added using our rich text editor, you can right click on the image and add alt-text.
